Al Hashem Gets Death Threat After Another Attack On Expats In Kuwait

Al Hashem has received a death threat after her latest anti-expatriate rant in Kuwaiti parliament.

What goes round most certainly came round for Kuwaiti MP Safa al Hashem after her aggressive anti-expat rant in the emirate’s parliament earlier this week. Several local news articles reported the female MP had received a death threat as a result of her demands that foreign workers should be taxed on literally everything, including the air they breath and the roads on which they walk or drive. When questioned by the media, she revealed she’d received another death threat following a previous speech calling for wholesale taxation of all the 3.3 million expats in the land.

As, the death threat was the second she’d received via email, she had now filed a complaint with Kuwait’s cybercrime agency along with a request that they identify the sender. Over the past few years, she’s become infamous for her controversial statements concerning the emirate’s demographic imbalance and her suggestions of ways to reduce the numbers of foreigners in the country. Her main grievance is that employing expats is tantamount to taking jobs away from Kuwaiti nationals eager to gain employment in their own country.

However, the truth hasn’t hit home yet that there’s no contest between qualified and experienced expat staff and locals without the right work experience or qualifications or even a wish to avoid working, and her enemies are now accusing her of making such statements in order to advance her popularity with a certain group of Kuwaitis. A general election is due in a year’s time, making boosting her popularity amongst hard line nationals a necessity if she stands any chance of re-election. Social media activists are already attacking her latest rant by calling her racist but others, it seems, are backing her position.
