Expats in Bulgaria are deciding to stay put and ride out the Brexit storm. For most British expats living in Bulgaria, the country fulfils their requirements and they’re staying put – Brexit or no Brexit.

Reasons include the fact that the cost of living is half that of the UK, and many simply don’t like what Britain has become since the referendum. Expat couples don’t have difficulties living on the total of two UK state pensions, and many live in the country’s small villages and are a part of local life.

One British retiree couple bought a quaint local cottage in a village close by the city of Lovech and are more than happy with their choice. The view across the peaceful countryside is a constant reminder that they made the right decision, especially as they’d lived under the Heathrow flight path and adjacent to the M25 motorway. They’d purchased their cottage from a Roma family, and Brexit issues haven’t changed their minds about their present lifestyle as they’ve integrated successful into local village life.

In Bulgaria there’s no such thing as a hostile environment for incomers, as community spirit is far more important here than is its fading equivalent in the UK. The couple are bracing themselves for possible changes, even although the government have promised to uphold the status of UK expats. They’ve updated their ID cards as recommended and obtained 10-year residency cards as well as Bulgarian driving licenses, and are happy to wait out the chaos until things settle down again. Neither like what the home country has become since the referendum result was announced, and they’ve no wish to ever repatriate.
