British Residents And Expats Have The Power To Stop Brexit

An online poll launched following MP Anna Soubry’s interview on the Andrew Marr Show is now showing 92 per cent in favour of dumping Brexit.

Soubry, a Tory pro-EU Remainer, appeared with Labour MP Chuka Umunna and stated unequivocally that she believes Brexit should not be allowed to happen, but adding it’s the British people who have the power to stop it. With the programme aired just days after the government announced long-stay expats would get votes for life but were prohibited from voting in referendums, it’s certain any populist move to stop Brexit would be supported by the bulk of British expats in Europe.

During the programme, Soubry stated she has absolutely no idea what’s really going down, a comment which is, no doubt, being repeated across Europe’s UK expat communities. According to Umunna, the House of Commons contains no majority in favour of jumping off a cliff, with Soubry adding May needs to be very careful right now as there’s a majority in Parliament for rejecting a hard Brexit.

In a recent interview with the Press Association, Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran said most people now believe Brexit should be cancelled, adding there’s now a real chance the Lib Dems could help reverse the decision, but would first need to convince the general public to believe in them. Stopping it, she added, is ‘doable’, as the majority now realise it’s a terrible mistake. If all those who are now wishing the entire charade would end, a referendum on the final deal would stop the nightmare.

Moran believes the British people have far more power than they realise, and the Labour Party should realise their future lies with younger voters, almost all of whom want to stay in the EU. With Labour’s help, she added, we can do this. Both the Andrew Marr programme and Moran’s interview seem to be part of a long-overdue rethink over Brexit, spurred by leaks of how severely it will hurt the British economy. British expats in EU member states may well be able to take some comfort from the development as well as joining the fight to reverse the Brexit threat before it’s too late.
