Brit expats in Spain’s Costa del Sol aren’t at all surprised the UK’s coronavirus death totals are now higher than Spain’s.
The UK is now the third highest in the list of world countries’ death tolls, having overtaken Spain’s total over the past week. America now has the highest number of deaths, with Italy’s total in second place and the UK’s now in third place with just over 26,000 fatalities to date. Many British expats living on Spain’s Costa del Sol are appalled by the manner in which the UK government is handling the lockdown as well as the general public for ignoring it, and aren’t surprised it’s resulted in this staggering loss of life.
According to the UK health secretary, Britain’s numbers of infections haven’t peaked yet and are expected to continue rising for several more weeks. Expats are putting this down to the way in which the UK’s lockdown has been handled after having been appalled to see crowds of holidaymakers and day-trippers on British beaches and in parks over the Bank Holiday weekends as well as on Mothering Sunday. Brits, it seems, aren’t taking notice of the rules and are in danger of fall sick and possibly dying as a result.
One British expat living in Alicante is also blaming the British government’s cutbacks of funds for the police service and the NHS, also blaming the fact that the lockdown was instigated too late and wasn’t tough enough. She said troops on the streets might have prevented the huge infection rates, but also blamed the British themselves for not taking the crisis seriously enough in the beginning.
