Confusion For Brit Expats Aiming To Use Gibraltar’s Border Crossing

Yet more chaos is on the cards for British expats attempting to get back to their Spanish homes, as they’re now forbidden from using the Gibraltar border crossing.

From midnight on May 18, the Spanish immigration authorities stopped British expat citizens from entering Spain at the Gibraltar border crossing after leaving the UK via Heathrow Airport. The reason for the sudden change seems to have been the introduction of new sanitation and hygiene ruling at Malaga Airport and four other air arrivals points. Strangely, it’s OK to leave Spain and enter Gibraltar as long as a British passport and flight boarding card are shown.

To make matters even more confusing for Brits needing to get back to their homes in Spain, border authorities in Gibraltar confirmed the Spanish border was open again on May 19th. As a result of the confusion and lack of reliable information, Brits attempting to return to Spain are now advised to check with their airlines on the border’s status prior to boarding their flights.

This week’s good news for expats living and working in Spain is that 288 Andalusian towns and cities now have no active coronavirus patients in some 37 per cent of all the region’s conurbations. Cities still recording infections include Granada, Seville and Malaga, all of which have between 1,000 and 1652 cases. Marbella, Almeria, Huelva and Cadiz are all reporting less than 200 confirmed cases, and the entire region now has 7,000 coronavirus victims who are still showing symptoms. It’s a similar story in the Costa del Sol, with 38 towns now free of the deadly pandemic.
