A gang of 10 French drug smugglers met their match in Mijas when a combined Spanish/French police raid ended their operations.
The latest win in the war against drug smugglers in Spain has resulted in the major bust of a French gang transporting cocaine and marijuana between Algeria, Morocco and Malaga. Once on Spanish soil, the drugs were repackaged and hidden in secret compartments installed behind motor vehicle license plates. The arrests took place in Mijas, one stop on the route used by the drug smugglers.
A successful joint operation between the Guardia Civil and the French Judicial Police resulted in the seizure of the 10 drug smugglers, 500 kilos of hashish and 46 kilos of cocaine. Concealed compartments below the floors of the five vehicles seized also contained weapons and money, including three semi-automatic pistols, one automatic sub-machine gun, ammunition and €9,000 in cash.
Several days later, expat residents in Mijas’s upmarket La Cala Hills urbanisation woke to find several garden walls in the exclusive development had been sprayed with graffiti in the Spanish language, with the ‘La Droga Hills’ translating as ‘The Drug Hills’. Expat inhabitants are furious, especially as one tag was found just outside a childrens’ play area. Expat moms are furious, telling local media reporters they’ve children who live and play on the estate who may not now be safe, with others calling the graffiti an ‘absolute disgrace’. It’s not yet known who was responsible or why the urbanisation was specifically targeted.
