UK and expat motorists are being urged to get a green card before driving in Europe.

The Association of British Insurers is urging drivers, whether UK expats or British residents, to get a Green Card before driving in Europe once Britain leaves the EU . Guidance published this morning covers a no-deal Brexit and urges drivers to contact their insurers and request a Green Card before travelling by car to or in Europe. The cards will be required as proof of valid insurance, and those travelling without one will be breaking the law. The rule will also apply to EU citizens wishing to drive in Britain.

Those most affected will include anyone who regularly drives between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, motorists planning to drive on the continent for business or leisure reasons and freight companies whose drivers regularly transport goods between the UK and EU member states. Last year, an agreement was made between all relevant insurance authorities in Europe to waive the requirement in the event of a no-deal Brexit, but as yet the agreement hasn’t been confirmed by the EC, making carrying a Green Card essential should a no-deal Brexit be the final result.

For expats wishing to travel outside their countries of residence as well as for those visiting EU member states, travel insurance will still work as normal. It’s not certain as yet whether the European Health Card will be replaced, making carrying travel insurance the recommended option, as is careful reading of the small print. Those applying for a Green Card should allow a month at least from application to delivery.
