ExpatBriefing: Saudi Begins Levying Higher Expat Taxes

By Dex Tennyson, for ExpatBriefing.com 14 July, 2017

Saudi Arabia's new tax on expatriate workers was introduced on July 1.

Under the previous regime, private sector firms that employed more foreign than local workers paid a SAR200 (USD53) per month levy on each non-Saudi employee.

As of July 1, an additional monthly tax of SAR100 (collected annually upon submission of visa requests or residence visa renewal requests) is being imposed on expatriate employees and their dependents, increasing to SAR200 next year, and reaching SAR400 by 2020.

A discounted rate is being applied also to those hiring expats where the company hires more Saudi Arabian nationals than foreigners.
