In a bid to diversify its failing economy, Oman is looking to allow both expats and citizens to take on part time and temporary jobs.
As the expat professional exodus from the Gulf States continues, Oman is planning to open up a part-time private sector job initiative aimed at both expatriates and locals. The move forms part of an attempt by the government to diversify the economy after the damage done by the pandemic is more clearly understood, as well as encouraging newly qualified graduates to take jobs within the home country.
As regards expats who’ve lost their jobs due to the economic crisis, a government minister told local media he’s aware that many don’t want to leave the emirate, with the chance to work part-time giving them a chance to continue earning as well as getting their lives back together. Temporary jobs will be allowed via a three-party agreement between the worker, their current employer and their future employer on a contractual basis, thus allowing the original employer to save on having to pay a wage when there’s no real work for the employee to do.
Part-time jobs and temporary work will also be allowed to those in full-time employment, thus giving extra wages for those who need them, and will also help provide a more dynamic work environment as well as more flexible labour rules. Initially, the new opportunities will apply to a total of 3,500 workers, and it’s hoped the scheme will benefit both the workers and the emirate’s post-pandemic economy.
