Expats And Locals Protest Global Warming As Massive Storm Hits Costa Blanca

As Earth Day Global Warming protests began worldwide, Spain’s largest April storm since 1946 slammed into the Costa Blanca region.

The massive storm unleashed gale force winds and flooded the region with 180mm of rain over just 12 hours, causing the state’s meteorological agency to issue a red alert flood warning. Expats and locals were urged not to drive and to stay well away from areas prone to flooding, and the region’s Civil Protection agency and local police are monitoring the worst affected areas. In particular, residents are being urged to stay away from coastal areas.

At the same time, climate change activists in Spain joined with other protests in London and around the world, with acts of civil disobedience intended to create a wake-up call to all governments at present ignoring the seriousness of the threat to the planet and its species. In Madrid, Extinction Rebellion protestors blocked off the main entrance to the headquarters of energy company Repsol, blocking all vehicles from entering, splashing the ground with fake blood and setting up a huge banner with the message ‘No Planet B’.

The Spanish protests were coordinated with the week-long event in London, hopefully providing a wake-up call to those still suspicious about man-made climate change and its effects on all species including humans. The London protests covered Oxford Circus, Parliament Square, Marble Arch, Canary Wharf and Waterloo Bridge, with the acts of civil disobedience taking place encouraged by onlookers. During her speech, Hollywood star Emma Thompson stated ‘The planet is in serious trouble’ echoing the fears of Earth Day protestors worldwide as well as British expats and locals on the Costa Blanca whose homes and gardens were ruined by the unusually violent storm.
