As part of the carefully managed loosening of Spain’s ultra-strict lockdown, the fresh markets popular with British expats living in Alicante are now allowed to open.
Alicante’s four fresh markets are popular with British expat residents for their wide selection of vegetables, fruit and meat as well as their traditional ambience and low prices. Closed down due to the pandemic, the four have been sadly missed by all the city's residents, and are due to reopen tomorrow.
Benualua, Babel, Teulada and Carolinas markets are major attractions for expat shoppers as well as Spanish citizens living along the Costa Blanca, and were closed down as part of the strict lockdown spurred by Spain’s high numbers of coronavirus infections. The new regulations ,which must be followed by both stallholders and customers, may take some getting used to, but at least stallholders will now be able to earn their livings and customers can buy their foodstuffs as normal.
Goods for sale will be limited to basic necessities and foodstuffs, with shoppers told to disinfect their hands before entering and not to touch produce for sale as well as keeping some two metres from stallholders and each other. Local police will be on hand to ensure the distancing regulations are in place, and each stall is allowed one vendor wearing a mask and gloves at all times. Also, stalls must be disinfected at frequent intervals to protect against the infection of buyers or sellers.
