One of the world’s most famous, most historic and reputedly most romantic cities is now under fire for being one of the worst destinations for expats.
According to a recent survey, it’s chaotic, expensive, dirty, prejudiced against expats, its political factions are pushing an anti-expat stance and salaries are too low to cover costs. According to local English language media, it’s not just one study which is slamming Rome as an expat destination, as other surveys are producing the same result as well as failing to recommend the 2,000-year old city as an expat hub.
Other reasons include taxation, the state of the economy, low salaries, a lack of safety and security, and poor environmental quality, with even one Italian newspaper hitting out at Rome’s quality of life. However, it would seem that not everything in Rome is a disaster as, unsurprisingly, Roman culture has immense value. Its magnificent monuments, concerts, museums and exhibitions are treasured by many, and show the city as it is – a world heritage on a grand scale due to its glorious history. It’s not known as the Eternal City for nothing, and little is needed to return it to its former overall beauty.
Nowadays, Romans and expatriates alike are getting together to reverse creeping urban decay, with volunteer organisations springing up like the proverbial mushrooms all over the huge conurbation. Whether or not expats decide to avoid Rome as a desirable location, its international community along with locals are working hard to fight back against the all-too obvious deterioration of its districts. Refusing to get accustomed to what is clearly unacceptable, those who care are making a difference and are determined to win in the end, with expatriates a strong part of the changes being made.
