Concerned British expats in Spain’s Costa Blanca region are ensuring they’ve got anti-virus masks by making and distributing them within their communities.
Members of the British community in San Miguel de Salinas are now getting all the protective masks they need after a team of volunteers was tasked with distributing 3,300 across the town. The masks were made both by the volunteers themselves and at a local factory after the municipality appealed for help in making and distributing the essential protections. The town is home to some 7,000 residents, many of whom are expats from the UK.
The local council has also asked for help in determining how many of the properties in the town are unoccupied holiday homes and how many are the homes of permanent residents including expat retirees. One mask is given to each person, along with a local council appeal for its wearing every time a resident leaves his or her home.
The making and distributing of free masks for residents in the region has now become one of the most positive ways to ensure the pandemic doesn’t escalate and spread more quickly. Other towns including Torrevieja, Orihuela and Bigastro are joining in the distribution, with tens of thousands of the protective face coverings now being made and delivered. Expats in particular are eager to help, as many in the region are elderly and well aware they may be at especial risk of infection by the deadly virus.
