The Kuwait health and education ministries are preparing to sack hundreds of expat professionals and replace them with locals.

The emirate’s Civil Service Commission is urging both the health and education ministries to finish drawing up lists of expat employees who will have their contracts terminated by the end of this year. Without the list, the SCS will be unable to complete the procedures necessary before hiring Kuwaitis by the beginning of 2020. The Ministry of Education is to cut some 450 jobs and the health ministry will terminate the contracts of 300 expat professional medical staff.

Starting with the eldest expats on contract, the Education Ministry’s list is expected to include professionals teaching the English language, computer skills and English literature, and will also include admin staff and supervisors. The Ministry of Health’s list will again focus on the oldest health professionals and will include mainly expat doctors and members of the nursing staff. All health workers scheduled for the sack will be informed by the end of this year, with teachers being told at the end of the school year.

At the same time, assistant undersecretary for administrative development Fahd al Ghaiss informed local English language media of the arrival from Jordan of 67 newly-recruited teachers, with 12 more expected to arrive in the very near future. In addition, 58 teachers have arrived from Tunisia with a further 39 due later this month. It wasn’t stated that the 125 new expat teachers have been employed to replace expat professionals terminated as above, but it’s being noted the two source countries for the new arrivals are both Muslim.
