New Europeans, a pro-EU civil rights group fighting for UK expats’ rights, is urging supporters to sign an open letter containing a plan to break the seemingly endless Brexit deadlock.
The letter suggests the EU could offer a three-month Article 50 extension in order to allow a second referendum to take place on 23 May, the same day as the EU parliamentary elections, adding the referendum to the ballot papers. The letter is to be sent to Jeremy Corbyn, Theresa May and the EU’s leading lawmakers, and also calls on the British Labour Party to sign off on the negotiated deal once an extension has been granted and legislation securing a second referendum has been passed. The British people would be given a choice of leaving via the negotiated deal or staying within the European Union.
At the present time, UK politicians are still planning for their part in the EU’s parliamentary election, despite the fact that it may well take place following a British no-deal crash out of the union. Should a new referendum result in the cancellation of Brexit, elected British MEPs could then take their seats; if not, the seats could be shared between the 27 remaining EU member states.
The New Europeans campaign is also strongly backing the call for a European Green Card as a solution covering freedom of movement and various other rights for UK expats living in Europe.
The letter itself can be found online at New Europeans’ website, and needs to be signed by every Briton, expat or resident, who sees it as a pragmatic solution to the present political chaos and the damage that will be caused to the UK and its citizens both at home and abroad should a no-deal Brexit be the final outcome.
