LEGO fanatics, collectors and admirers of Vincent Van Gogh and his paintings have something to be excited about! The LEGO 3D set of Van Gogh’s Starry Night will be available soon!
Nowadays you can build virtually anything from LEGO! Decades have passed since the days when LEGO consisted only of rectangular bricks for building mini houses. Back then, anything with contours or unusual textures were the preserve of virtuosic LEGO builders with time on their hands. With LEGO's ever-evolving innovative ideas, colours, shapes and designs and interaction with its fanbase, these days you can practically build anything imaginable.
Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh
Starry Night is one of the most iconic, instantly recognisable and often-quoted paintings by Van Gogh, painted a year before the Dutch painter's death. He painted it in 1889, during his time in a psychiatric institution at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in the south of France.
Van Gogh had a view of the village from his window, with a church as a landmark on the horizon, gently-rolling hills in the distance and a tall, dark Cypress tree on the left in the foreground. The moon and stars in the sky are what give the painting its special edge, with swirling blues and glowing yellows.
1.552 LEGO pieces make up the Starry Night
The 1.552 LEGO pieces are in multiple tones of blue, green, yellow and brown, with a range of different sized rectangular and rounded shapes. The painting is known for its highly visible brush strokes, a sense of movement in the bright sky and a stripey appearance in the landscape of the village in the distance. This can all be conveyed with bricks in different patterns, with rows of blue rectangles and layered yellow disks.
There’s even a LEGO figurine of Vincent Van Gogh himself, complete with a paintbrush, palette, easel and a gruff expression on his face.
LEGO Ideas
The upcoming release is thanks to the user-generated dimension of LEGO. Fans voted and LEGO took action.
LEGO Ideas is a community of LEGO enthusiasts and fans where like-minded people can share their creative product ideas, showcase proposals, enter contests and vote for innovative projects to get approved. It was the club member known as Legotruman that came up with the idea for the LEGO version of Van Gogh’s Starry Night, which received the required 10.000 votes to be accepted.
Legotruman said, “As a LEGO fan and an admirer of the painter, I wish to recreate one of his most celebrated artwork in Lego form, and share this with all Lego fans and art lovers!” His idea garnered 10.000 votes and so the world gets to see this wonderful LEGO creation.
Now it’s going ahead, so Van Gogh fans and LEGO fans alike can look forwards to building a nifty little replica of the famous painting in coloured bricks!
