As the security situation surrounding the passenger plane crash in Iraq becomes more sinister, expats living and working in the Gulf States as well as visitors are again being advised to watch their backs.
Tensions in Egypt and Turkey as well as the Gulf States are high due to fears of retaliation involving tourists as well as expats, and even cruise companies are warning of possible schedule changes. US expats in the UAE are being told to take the usual precautions, although should it be confirmed that the downed aircraft was hit by Iranian missiles stronger warnings may well be issued. As the missile theory becomes more credible, it’s possible more USA retaliatory action will be taken, increasing the risk of expat casualties within the region.
In addition, Western expats in the UAE are being urged to leave by locals as well as by a professor from the University of Tehran who believes both Iranian and Iraqi leaders will retaliate sooner rather than later. A current article in a UAE English language newspaper states Western expats should ignore exaggerations in the international press after recommendations for immediate relocation were published, whilst long-stay expats are telling reporters both Abu Dhabi and Dubai are still safe.
At the present time, much rests on the initial results of the investigation into the appalling loss of life due to the as yet unexplained plane crash. A video claiming to track a missile as it heads towards the plane has gone viral, with international online and TV media devoting much time to analysis, whilst the US Senate’s vote to curtail Trump’s worst impulses is being challenged as not legally binding. As for Western expat professionals across the entire region, all they can do is wait and hope.
